Paulownia (Kiri)

Fast-growing timber for high-value biobased construction

Paulownia: the foundation for biobased construction

Paulownia is one of the fastest growing trees in the world and delivers light, strong and versatile timber for various applications in construction and industry. Thanks to its unique properties and rapid growth, Paulownia forms a future-proof crop that perfectly meets the growing demand for biobased materials.

At Dealin.Green, we directly connect Paulownia cultivation to concrete applications in construction.

Why choose Paulownia?

Unique timber: light and strong

Paulownia is known as the “aluminium among wood species”. Thanks to its honeycomb structure, the wood is exceptionally light (± 290 kg/m³), strong and stable. It absorbs almost no moisture and is easy to work with, which makes it suitable for applications such as CLT, facade cladding and board material.

Very fast growth and regrowth

With a growth of 2 to 5 meters per year, Paulownia is among the fastest wood-producing crops. After felling, the tree regrows, allowing multiple harvest cycles within one planting.

Multiple harvests and long lifespan

  • - Intermediate harvest: ± 180 m³/ha fibers every 4 years

  • - Final harvest: ± 300 m³/ha timber every 8 years

  • - Duration: 25–30 years (6–8 harvest cycles)

CO₂ capture with concrete value

During growth, Paulownia captures large amounts of CO₂, which is stored long-term in wood applications. This translates into:

  • - ± 225 carbon credits/ha (fibers, 4 years)

  • - ± 380 carbon credits/ha (timber, 8 years)

Suitable for agriculture and future-oriented applications

The cultivation contributes to:

  • - Improvement of soil structure through deep root system (up to 5 meters)

  • - Strong increase in biodiversity (above and below ground)

  • - A permanently green plot with positive impact on the surroundings

Paulownia is classified as an agricultural crop (CAP 7136) and fits within a modern cultivation system in which production, soil improvement and sustainability come together.
